Examination of Samples of Armor Plate,

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the composition of the metal and, if possible, the type of heat treatment given. The plate submitted was a plain medium carbon steel, carburized on both faces and subsequently quenched from a relatively high temperature. Decarburization was evident at the surface of the plate. Iron-nitride was present in the carburized surface of an annealed sample of the plate although no evidence was obtained that the plate may have been intentionally nitrided. The ballistic properties of the plate are inferior to those of the standard heat treated chromium-molybdenum-vanadium homogeneous plate of the same thickness.
