Examination of 1-1/2 Inch Diebold Face-Hardened Plate,

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to study the microstructure, physical and ballistic properties of plate No. 9-R-6724 used in the testing of experimental 37 mm. shot. Occasional chipping on the carburized face of this high ballistic plate is due to the presence of considerable segregation of long stringers of nonmetallic inclusions. Due to the greater ductility of the core, the effect of these laminations was not evident on the rear portion of the core.
