Statement of Progress to Office of the Chief of Ordnance, War Department.

Abstract

Specimens of the argon-arc, carbon-arc, and metallic-arc welded joints in the 2-inch-thick 2S as-rolled aluminum plate, which were reported completed last month, were tested in tension and bending. The argon-arc weld was made using 2S filler rod, partially rectified welding current, and a beading technique; the carbon-arc weld was made using 2S filler rod. The metal-arc welds were made using both 2S and 43S coated electrodes. Two tensile tests and one free-side bend test were made on each weld joint. A flat-bar tensile test of the as-rolled 2-inch-thick 2S plate was also made to provide a direct comparison between the plate strength and the weld joint strengths.
