Welded 1/2 Inch Steel Plate Propeller Stock - Wright Field,

Abstract

Two specimens containing welds showing good and bad welding characteristics were submitted by Wright Field. These two specimens were experimental tests to illustrate the difficulty encountered. The weld bead was melted with an atomic hydrogen torch, no welding rods being used. All the metal in the bead was melted-plate stock. The weld which illustrated the poor welding stock was number 40, the good welding stock number 85. The poor welding stock (No. 40) showed the steel to be very abnormal. The good welding stock (No. 85) showed the steel to be slightly abnormal. The cause of the abnormal condition is believed due to dissolved oxygen in the steel.
