Effect of Ballistic Tests on Defective Cast Armor Plate,

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine: (a) Whether or not cracks in the metal result from bullet impact in certain armor plate castings that contain usual casting defects, such as pipes, tears, gas cavities and non-metallic inclusions. (b) The effect of these casting defects on the ballistic efficiency. (c) The extent of crack systems resulting from bullet impact. The results of the this investigation are based on X-ray, Macroscopic and Microscopic examination of selected areas of defective heat-treated armor plate castings which have been subjected to drastic bullet impact, using Cal. . 30 M1922 armor piercing ammunition.
