Investigation on the Welding of High-Strength Aluminum Alloys.

Abstract

Upon receipt of the 1-1/2-inch-thick 24ST, 61SW, 61ST, 75SW, and 75ST aluminum alloy plates, flat-bar tension specimens with a 10-inch reduced section were cut, both transverse and parallel to the direction of rolling, from representative plates. At the same time other plates were machined for double-U groove joints for weld tests. It was originally planned to make comparable welded joints in all five alloys, and the welding program was actually started on this basis. However, upon further consideration of the original program, it seemed advisable to make a complete series of tests on the 61S plates, in both the W and T tempers, before going on with the welding of the 24S and 75S plates. The chances for improving the strength of welded joints in 61S were better than for the 24S or 75S alloys. Before starting on the revised program, two 24S plates and two 75S plates were welded, but the testing of these plates will be held in abeyance until the tests on the 61S plates are completed.
