Operating Characteristics of Arc Welding Electrodes.

Abstract

An investigation of operating characteristics of three classes of metal-arc welding electrodes took place in this report. All electrodes used were of commerical manufacture and are considered, after extensive preliminary tests, to be representative of their respective classes. The general operating characteristics of all three classees of electrodes tested were quite good, although it is considered that some improvement could be made in the position operating qualities of the E-100025 Class. The penetrating characteristics of the E-6010 electrode is generally superior to that of other classes of electrodes. This is especially true when we consider that only 180 amps were used (with 3/16 inch diameter electrode) in making these test welds. The class E-6012 electrode is undoubtedly a very good general purpose electrode, but it does not have the penetrating qualities of the class E-6010 and the High strength electrodes. A very interesting phenomenon, disclosed by this investigation, is that weld metal penetration and depth of heat-affected zone do not increase or decrease together. It was found that the depth of heat-affected zone decreases when weld metal penetration increases, and conversely, when weld metal penetration decreases, the depth of heat-affected zone increases.
