Investigation on the Welding of High-Strength Aluminum Alloys.

Abstract

Industrial applications of arc- and gas-welded high-strength aluminum alloy assemblies have been limited because of the poor weldability of these alloys and because suitable high-strength filler metals have not been available. With the limited information available on the welding of high-strength aluminum alloys, the need for a comprehensive investigation of the welding of thick plates of high-strength aluminum alloys that may be applicable to ordnance requirements was indicated. The Army Ordnance Department therefore authorized Battelle to conduct such an investigation. The project has four principal parts, whose objectives are: 1) Strength Properties of Conventionally Welded Joints was to determine the strength properties of welded joints in thick plates of 24S, 61S, and 75S aluminum alloys, and such other aluminum alloys as may be selected subsequently, using carbon-arc, argon-arc, and other welding processes, and currently available filler metals. 2) Development of Improved Weld Metals was to investigate the welding characteristics, strength, and related properties of various aluminum alloy weld metals, as influenced by filler metal and flux components, welding techniques, mechanical working, and postweld heat treatments. 3) Development of Higher Efficiency Welded Joints was to investigate the welding of thick plates of 24S, 61S, and 75S aluminum alloys, and such other aluminum alloys as may be selected subsequently, using conventional and special filler metals and welding techniques, and various mechanical working and postweld heat treatments with the objective of producing high-efficiency joints.
