Examination of 1 Inch Face Hardened Armor Plate,

Abstract

The object of this investigation was to determine the cause of failure of 1 inch face hardened armor plate subjected to calibre .50 A.P. impact. Contributory causes for failure are enumerated below: (1) Local segregations of elongated nonmetallic inclusions present in the steel base. (2) A martensitic condition of the steel base due to its high carbon content (.62% C). Experimental Procedure Chemical analyses were made on samples machined from the case and core of the plate. Macro and microscopic examination was made on representative samples cut from the plate. A study of the deformation was made on a section out through one of the bullet holes. Hardness surveys were made on a section of the plate.
