Analysis of Design on Tujunga Wash Channel Improvement, Los Angeles River to Hansen Dam, Vanowen Street to Beachy Avenue, Station 222+00 to Station 362+00, Mile 4.20 to Mile 6.86.
Abstract
The principal items of improvement within this reach consist of approximately 12100 feet of rectangular reinforced concrete channel, seventy feet wide, with wall heights varying from 11.5 to 15.0 feet; the variable width confluence and transition structure approximately 900 feet in length at Pacoima Wash and 1000 feet of rectangular channel sixty feet wide with wall heights varying from 11.0 to 12.0 feet. Three clear span reinforced concrete bridges, including street approaches at Sherman Way, Saticoy and Cantara Streets, will be constructed under this contract, using designs furnished by the city of Los Angeles and funds contributed by the Los Angeles County Flood Control District. Authority to accept contributed funds has been requested. The construction of a shoofly and a new railway bridge where the Southern Pacific Coast Line crosses the channel will be included in this contract. The provision for side drainage along this contract reach consists of several storm drains from 24 inches to 48 inches in diameter and a spillway at the top of the right bank wall downstream of the Southern Pacific Railroad bridge. Five water lines of diameters varying from 8 inches to 72 inches, one 3-inch gas line, seven power lines two of which carry telephone wires and two pole lines at the Southern Pacific Coast Line cross the proposed channel and require varying degrees of modification or relocation.
