German Sintered Iron Rotating Bands. Ballistic Features of the Sintered Iron Bands.

Abstract

This report, which deals with the ballistic features of the sintered iron bands, presents a general summary of the performance of sintered iron bands in guns of normal velocity and experimental firings at high velocities. This general summary is based not only on a few specific firing test results but also a study of numerous German documents of semi-official nature and on the information obtained personally by Mr. Tour in interrogation in Germany of various German personnel who were concerned with the production of sintered iron bands during the war. The features of the design of the rotating bands and the band seat groove are illustrated with the aid of a drawing of a German 75 mm. projectile, which was the only size for which drawings were available. This report also includes a brief summary of the work done in the United States on sintered iron rotating bands.
