Welding Test 194. Supplement. S.T.S. Cylinders Subjected to Explosive Impact.

Abstract

This test is a continuation of one previously authorized and reported. Its purpose was to determine the effect of spacing the longitudinal and peripheral stiffener rivets 6 diameters apart instead of 4-1/2 diameters as in the previous test. One additional cylinder, E, was constructed but with the rivets in the longitudinal and peripheral stiffeners spaced 6 diameters apart instead of 4-1/2 diameters. Punch marks were made approximately five inches apart encircling the cylinder at three levels and on the inside of the cylinder at the lowest level. Measurements were taken between alternate marks before and after impact in order to determine the permanent set in the metal. As in the previous test the model was filled with water and the charge of TNT, in this case 8 pounds, was suspended at the center of the model and exploded.
