Welding Test Number 191, An Investigation to Determine the Physical Properties of Partially Grooved Tee Joints Made with Grade EA Electrodes, Tension, Shear and Bend Tests.
Abstract
The type of welded joints represented in the following tests has hitherto been intended for use in locations where joint efficiencies of less than 100 per cent are permitted. The present tests were authorized to determine the actual efficiency of this type of joint. By a partially grooved Tee joint is meant one in which the chamfer on the end of the intercostal member is incomplete, leaving a flat section in contact with the continuous plate. In the transverse-Tee tension specimen, this flat section is 1/4 in. wide. If the weld penetration is less than 1/8 in. from each side, an unfused holiday will be left which is the equivalent of a crack. Four different types of partially grooved specimens were made of medium steel at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. and shipped to the Experimental Model Basin for test.
