Investigation of the Welding of High-Strength Aluminum Alloys.

Abstract

This is the fourth report on the investigation on the welding of high-strength aluminum alloys. The three previous reports, have covered in detail preliminary studies on welding techniques for the welding of thick plates, tests on welded joints in thick 2S aluminum plate, and two series of experiments on unorthodox methods of joining aluminum. That work is summarised in this report, which also covers in detail the tests on welded joints in high-strength aluminum alloys (61SW, 61St, 24ST, 75SW, and 75ST). The program for the investigation on the welding of thick high-strength aluminum allys was initially divided into four parts. Part I was on the determination of the strength properties of conventionally welded joints; Part II was on the development of improved weld metals; Part III was on the development of higher efficiency welded joints; and Part IV was on the evaluation and development of unorthodox methods of joining the test materials.
