Mobile Rotary Well-Drilling Rig,

Abstract

In considering equipment to be developed for securing deep ground water for troops in the field, it was found that a Rotary Well Rig capable of drilling a well of 4 to 5 inch diameter, to a maximum depth of 1000 feet, with arrangements for air-lift pumping of the initial water supply, offered the best solution in a majority of instances, though there were geological conditions under which a cable tool drilling rig would be required for satisfactory performance. The Rotary Well Rig offers equipment which can be used for taking cores, putting in footings with expanded bottoms, preparing foundations, making demolition borings, jetting wells, and for other special services. Exploratory drilling for wells, or for other purposes, within the capacities of the drill, can be accomplished without the necessity to set castings. Based upon the knowledge of the strata in such borings, casings and screens may later be set accurately, if a permanent or temporary well is to be developed at the site. A number of wells have been sunk on the Fort Belvoir Military Reservation and on the Carlisle Barracks Military Reservation to determine the capacities of the pilot model rotary well rig.
