Sea-Ice Temperature Curves for Slidre Fiord, Canada.

Abstract

Sea-ice temperatures at various depths in the ice were observed in Slidre Fiord, Eureka, N.W.T., Canada (79 deg 59 min N, 85 deg 47 min W) during the 1949-50 and 1950-51 winter seasons. Slidre Fiord is located on the western side of Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Artic Archipelago. The fiord runs east-south-eastward from Eureka Sound and is about 30 kilometers long and 5.5 kilometers wide. The temperature measurements were made approximately 250 meters from the shoreline where the water is about 60 meters deep. Ice forms in Slidre Fiord as early as late August and freezover (i.e., ice from shore to shore) usually occurs by the third week of September (Burbidge and Lauder, 1957). At Eureka air temperatures decrease rapidly during September (U. S. Weather Bureau, Climatological Summary, Eureka). This rapid fall in temperature, when accompanied by light winds, usually produces smooth ice-surface conditions except along the shoreline. The ice gradually deteriorates and moves out of the fiord by late July and except for occasional icebergs the fiord usually remains ice-free until late August (Bilello, 1961, 1964). Maximum ice thickness recorded at Eureka during 13 years of available record was 279 cm, observed in 1947.
