Description and Calibration of a Wall Balance System for a 15 by 20-inch Subsonic Wind Tunnel.

Abstract

A three-component strain gage type wall balance for a 15 by 20-inch Subsonic Wind Tunnel has been built and calibrated. The balance construction was based on a Honeywell Corporation design and is considered proprietary information. This system uses a set of three concentric rings on each side of the two walls of the tunnel test section to measure lift, drag and pitching moment. Maximum loads are + or - 300 pounds in lift and + or - 50 pounds in drag. Calibration results indicate the balance is reliable to within 1 percent in lift and drag, but moment results are only fair and at best the accuracy is only within 5 percent. Additional keywords include: U/A Reports, Dynamic pressure, Two dimensional tunnels.
