Improvement of the Pedograph, M1,

Abstract

The Pedograph, M1, is useful for rough mapping and sketching and for land navigation by individual soldiers or small groups. More specifically, the Pedograph, M1, may be used effectively with aerial photography to aid in filling in obscured details and to determine scale and magnetic orientation. It is useful for plotting the course of roads, trails, and streams, and for the location of important landmarks in unfamiliar terrain for which no maps are available. The Pedograph, M1, has been used successfully by forward observers for mortars and supporting artillery to locate themselves with respect to the weapons and initial observation posts, and to make the basic survey for location of microphone arrays and weapon positions for sound locating set GR-6. For the latter application, the pedograph is more rapid than, and substantially equal in accuracy to, present standard self-survey methods. It has the additional advantage of enabling such surveys to be made in advance of the arrival of either the GR-6 equipment, or the weapons associated with it. During World War II, the Pedograph, M1, was successfully used by the 31st Infantry Division for mapping road nets in the Philippines. The principal component parts, all constructed of non-magnetic materials, are a housing, compass, thread pulley, thread assembly, gear train assembly, plotting wheel, map platen assembly, tracing point, marking point, and lighting system. The trace is drawn on a map sheet measuring 6 by 10 inches.
