Metallurgical Examination of Samples from Three Ballistically Tested 'I' Repair Welded Plates Submitted by American Steel Foundries.

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to compare chemical analyses and mechanical properties of repair weld deposits in three plates welded respectively in the flat, horizontal, and vertical welding positions and to determine whether variations in these properties were sufficient to account for differences in ballistic performance. Metallurgical examination, including macroexamination and hardness surveys across the welded joints, chemical analyses, and Charpy v-notch impact tests of weld metal deposits, was carried out on the subject plates. The inconsistencies in ballistic test results are not explained by variations in hardness and impact resistance of the repair welds.
