Metallurgical Examination of Samples from the T16 Universal Carrier Hull.

Abstract

A metallurgical examination including fracture tests, macroscopic and microscopic examinations, Brinell hardness surveys, torsion tests, and chemical analyses were made on three samples from a T16 Universal Carrier Hull, namely two 7/32 inch thick sections which spalled badly and one 9/32 inch section which spalled to a lesser degree. Spalling in the three samples was associated with unsatisfactory steel soundness as revealed by the fracture test for steel soundness, the torsion test and metallographic examination. It is demonstrated that the distribution of the nonmetallic inclusions in this material is more clearly revealed in the transverse fracture for steel soundness than in the longitudinal fracture.
