Survey Report on Cooper River, S.C. (Shoaling in Charleston Harbor), Appendix B. Spoil Disposal.

Abstract

Primary emphasis is upon determination of the most practicable solution to the current dredge spoil disposal problem, and that which would exist both with and without the construction of corrective works for the alleviation of shoaling. The period 1965-2024 is chosen pursuant to above-stated authority and includes a 50-year period beyond the estimated completion date of proposed corrective works. Discussions are included on the following matters: (1) Location of shoals and estimated annual quantities by shoal reaches. (2) Attitude of Navy and shipping interests towards conditions of channels. (3) Present and potential disposal areas. (4) year-by-year plan for dredging and disposal of spoil materials for the next 60 years, including estimated costs. (5) Types of maintenance operations considered with estimated costs and reasons for selecting recommended types. (6) Arrangements made with local sponsors to furnish disposal areas needed and prospects that the areas will be furnished when needed, including adequacy of arrangements in view of National Defense uses of the harbor.
