Armor Plate: Metallurgical Examination of Italian Armor Head Piece from the Seat Back of a Macchi - 202 Plane,

Abstract

The object of this work is to make a metallurigical examination of the subject armor including a chemical analysis, hardness surveys, macroscopic and microscopic examination. This 8-mm. armor is composed of ggod quality cross rolled steel of the following composition: c/.38, Mn/.45, Si/.99, S/.015, P/0.11, Ni/.26, Cr/2.38. The plate is homogeneous armor heat treated to a hardness of 477 Brinell. Brittleness against overmatching projectiles, which resulted in the plate shattering under the impacts of Cal.50 A.P. ammunition, is attributed to the high hardness level of the plate.
