Powder Metallurgy: The Influence of Processing Conditions Upon the Density-Mechanical Property Relationships of Iron Powder Compacts.

Abstract

The object of this project is to investigate the changes in the relationships between the density and the mechanical properties of iron powder compacts which are brought about by changes in processing procedure. It was found that iron powder compacts of any given density have essentially the same tensile strength, ductility, resistance to impact, hardness, shear strength, and modulus of elasticity, independent of processing methods, provided the total sintering time is kept constant. Curves relating each of the above properteis to teh density for compact fromed either by single pressing tand singering or by pressing and sintering twice are presented in this report. It is shown that these curves are very nearly identical and that any variations may be accounted for by experimental error due t irregularities in processing and in the surface condition of test bars.
