Metallurgical Examination of Two 105mm. Gun Shields Serial Number 1 and Serial Number 2, Heat Number 1506, Manufactured by Continental Foundry & Machine Company.

Abstract

This report covers a metallurigical examination of two 105mm. gun shield castings manufactured by Continental Foundry & MAchine Company. The fisrst casting, which after austenitiging had been quenched in water for 5 1/2 minutes, exhibited extremely low toughness in fracture and Charpy impact tests. The secong casting which was quenched for 20 minutes exhibited considerably superior toughness, and it would be considered satisfactory providing the very heavy (about 8-in) body of the casting is not expected to be subjected to matching or overmatching caliber projectiles which would probably result in inferior shock resistence and a cracking tendency in this tendency.
