Metallurgical Investigation of the Fiber Fracture Test Used by the Union Steel Castings Division of Blaw-Knox Company.

Abstract

The object of this report was to investigate the test to determine if its use shows promise of improving the average quality and decreasing the amount of rejections of armor plate castings. While the test in itself is inadequate as an inspection control; it nevertheless introduced the concept of utilizing the appearance of a fractured surface as a means of checking the heat treatment of armor steel. Further work at this Arsenal has led to the development of a fracture test which, as applied to armor, is well adapted to the control of production heat treating processes.
