Powder Metallurgy, Evaluation and Correlation of the Properties of Heat-Treated Iron-Graphite Powder Compacts.

Abstract

The object of this study was to determine certain physical properties and correlations between these properties of heat-treated steel compacts formed by powder metallurgy. It was found that physical property correlations determined for unalloyed iron compacts are also good for heat-treated steel compacts formed form a commercial mixture of iron and graphite. The yield and tensile strengths are linear funtions of both the hardness and the shear strength. The ductility of steel compacts is low and can be measured more accurately by bend tests than by conventional tensile tests. Bend angle and hardness were found to be dependent upon density.
