Progress Report from the Chairman, Metallurgical Advisory Board (3rd)
Abstract
The Metallurgical Advisory Board, operating under a contract between the Department of Defense and the National Academy of Sciences, received formal assignments from the Chairman, Research and Development Board, to conduct studies and to prepare technical reports on the following subjects: Cobalt; Columbium; Manganese; Molybdenum; Nickel; Tantalum; Titanium-Zirconium; Tungsten; Substitution of Alloying Elements In Engineering Steels; Free Machining Steels; High Temperature Materials; Naval Armor; Naval Guns; Naval Vehicles; Electro-Processes for Machining and Grinding; Permanent Magnet Materials; Germanium; Beryllium; and Powder Metallurgy. The purpose of these reports is to advise the Research and Development Board with respect to the technical problems involved in the production, use and conservation of metals and alloys and when desirable, to suggest the type of research programs and projects which appear necessary to the defense effort.
