Development of Production of Experimental High-Strength Ferritic Electrodes.

Abstract

Nearly one hundred experimental low-hydrogen, high-strength-type arc-welding electrodes involving major changes in formulas were produced and tested in Army Ordnance high-strength steels (armor). From these electrodes, five were selected, three of which were considered to have promise for fulfilling the requirements for welding steels in the range of 100,000 psi, and two for welding steels of 130,000 psi range. After masking some further improvements to these selected electrodes, an extensive evaluation program was conducted on the welds produced by these electrodes to determine, among other properties, their Charpy vee-nothced bar and notched-bend joint toughness characteristics at various temperatures, including the lowest contemplated service temperature of -65 F.
