Arc Welding of Armor. Rolled, Homogeneous, 1 Inch Thick Armor Plate, Welded with Ferritic Electrode by the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation and Heat Treated Subsequent to Welding.

Abstract

The object is to carry out ballistic penetration test and metallurgical examination of subject plates. Ballistic limit of the welds, tested with .50 caliber A.P. M2 projectiles, is satisfactory. Metallurgical characteristics of the weld are satisfactory except for slag inclusions and undercutting which were revealed by radiographic inspection. No advantage is apparent from preheating since cracks were not formed in base metal of plate welded without preheat and since objectionable features of as-welded structure were eliminated by heat treatment subsequent to welding.
