'Five Point' Deephard Process Applied to Light Armor Plate,
Abstract
Two commercial steels, one 1/2-in thick, the other 7/8 in. thick and of different compositions, were carburized by the Five Point method and subsequently heat treated by the company. These plates were then submitted to Watertown Arsenal for a study of their metallurgical and ballistic properties. The cases produced by this process had good metallurgical characteristics, especially with respect to the gradual transition in carbon content from case to core and resulting Brinell hardness gradient after heat treatment. This carburizing technique applied to standard armor plate compositions and heat treated according to standard practice would undoubtedly produce a satisfactory face-hardened armor.
