Powder Metallurgy: Evaluation and Correlation of the Quality Characteristics of Powdered Iron Compacts.

Abstract

The values of the quality characteristics of iron powder compacts were found to be dependent upon the material from which the compacts are formed and the processing operations which they subsquently receive, Impact strength is particularly sensitive to changes in material and processing. It is possible to evaluate the porosity and porosity distribution within powder compacts by means of radiogrphic technique. Data obtained in the determination of certain quality characteristics may be used as a measure of related characteristics, Useful relationships were fopund between tensile strength and shear strength, tensile strength and bend strength, and elongation and bend angle. The uniformity and reproducilibility of results were determined by the testing of a limited number of specimens. Particularly close values were obtained for tensile and shear properties but results for the bend properties of resintered materials were rather undependable.
