Investigation of Foreign Ordnance Materiel.

Abstract

A complete metallurgical study was made on captured artillery ammunition and on components of a Soviet 122mm Howitzer gun. These items were submitted to Armour Research Foundation by Watertown Arsenal and Picatinny Arsenal. Whenever indicated, the materials investigation was supplemented by a functional analysis of the gun mechanism. This analysis was carried out by the Mechanisms and Dynamics Department of Armour Research Foundation. The melting practice, fabrication and finishing methods of individual parts could be deduced from the chemical analysis macro- and microexaminations as well as metallurgical and mechanical strength tests. These findings were compared critically with current domestic manufacturing practices of weapons and ammunition. It was pointed out where foreign manufacturing methods were inferior to equivalent U. S. processes.
