Report on Correlation of Cooling Velocity of the Standard Jominy Hardenability Test with the Cooling Velocity within the Cross-Section of Plates,

Abstract

INgots of two different chenical analysis were prepared, forged and rolled to various thicknesses for cross-section cooling rate study. Also keel blocks of two different chemical analyses were case and split into the same range of plate thickness, 1/2 in, 3/4 in, 1 in, 1-1/2 in, and 2 in. for the cross-section cooling rate study. One set of rolled plates is ready for its initial quench to determine if tghe method is satisfactory before similarly preparing the remaining sets of plates. The effect of rolled and cast structure as well as the effect of quenching temperature, quenching media, and chemical analysis on the cooling rate will thus complete the picture. Cooling rates at 1300 F. were obtained at different disances from the quenched end of the standard Jominy hardenability bars taken from the rolled and cast plates. The effect of quenching were also determined. Consistently, the recorded rates are higher than those in the published literature regardless of chemical composition, structure or quenching temperature.
