Powder Metallurgy - Iron Powders and Products.

Abstract

The characteristics of commercially available from powders and the relative physical properties of bars processed from them were studied. The processes by which the powders studied had been manufactured were reflected in the physical properties of the final product. Close control of such properties as oxygen content and particle porosity was found to be desirable in order to assure uniformity of the pressed product. The tensile properties of compacts pressed from powders produced by electrolytic deposition were found to be superior to the properties of compacts pressed from powders produced by other methods. It is considered that this superiority may be attributed in part to the high degree of chemical purity of electrolytic powders. It was found that the addition of low percentage of alloying elements to iron powders, particularly those which were very finely divided, materially increased the ultimate tensile strength of the sintered compacts. Since the existing wide variations in the physical characteristics of commercially available iron powders affect the properties of the finished parts, it may be necessary to include certain of these characteristics in specifications for such parts. These powder specifications should include oxygen content, apparent density, specific surface area and compressibility.
