Metallurgical Examination of Experimental 3/8 Inch Face Hardened Armor.

Abstract

This U/A report covers an investigation of four 3/8 in. experimental face hardened plates which were prepared by the Buick Motors Division of the General Motors Corporation under NRC Project 30. The plate were rolled from a low alloy steel, 94T20, gas carburized, followed by a diffusion treatment and subsequently oil quenched and tempered. Superior resistance to penetration properties were obtained coincident with satisfactory ductility characteristics. The plates were rolled from a clean steel, carburized to a considerable depth (30-35% of plate thickness) and subsequently heat treated a produce an exceptionally high face hardness, a high back hardness and superior ductility in consideration of the high hardness of the core of the plates.
