Metallurgical Examination of a Defective Cast Armor Front End Casting for Light Tank M3,

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to study the metallurgical properties of the material and to determine the cause of failure. The results of this investigation indicate that the failure of the front end casting can be attributed to: (a) Too high Brinell hardness; and (b) Considerable unsoundness with piping and porosity.
