Participation and Achievement in the USAFI (United States Armed Forces Institute) High School GED (General Educational Development) Program,

Abstract

This is the first of a series of reports which will describe the utilization of the USAFI high school GED testing program and the benefits the serviceman derives from obtaining a high school equivalency certificate both in his service career and later civilian life. This report covers 231,973 first term separatees who had entered the service without a high school diploma. It was found that 59.4% (137,792) had attempted to attain high school equivalency by taking the USAFI GED tests and 63.2% (87,110) of the GED program participants achieved the DOD required level for granting high school equivalency. The study identifies factors associated with participation and achievement in the GED program and provides rates of participation and achievement for various subgroups of servicemen.
