Exposure Sites for Troop Tests of Magnesium-Enclosed Equipment.

Abstract

Eight areas, situated on or near the Pacific and Atlantic seacoasts of North America, are recommended as being climatically suitable for exposure tests of magnesium-enclosed equipment. Each of these areas is represented by one of the following climatic stations: San Diego, Los Angles, and San Francisco, California; Olympia, Washington; Cristobal, Canal Zone; Corpus Christi, Texas; Key West, Florida; and Norfolk, Virginia. Permanent military installations exist in each of the areas. Environmental conditions considered of prime importance in the selection of areas are severe salt-air contamination, persistently high relative humidity, frequent fog, and high temperature. Conditions of secondary significance are prevailing onshore winds, low wind speeds, precipitation of low intensity, little sunshine, and urban contamination, None of the eight areas has all these favored conditions. The relative suitability of the selected areas for testing is as follows: (1) areas in California and the Gulf Of Mexico; (2) Cristobal area; (3) Olympia and Norfolk areas, In general, the moost desirable areas are situated on or within close proximity to warm, humid seashores.
