Effect of Long Time Solution Heat Treatment on the Properties of 4 Inch Thick R301T Aluminum Alloy Armor Plate.

Abstract

This report covers the investigation of a 50 hour solution treatment as compared with a standard 3 hour solution treatment in improving the properties of aluminum alloy armor plate. A 4 thick section of wrought R301T alloy made by the Reynolds Metals Company was investigated, and it was found that the long time solution treatment produced no appreciable improvement as compared with the standard heat treatment in ductility as measured by the elongation in the tensile test and the energy absorbed in breaking, of notched tensile impact specimens. In the alloy studied, no appreciable change in the distribution or solution of the insoluble type intermetallic compounds were observed.
