Study and Development of Light-Armor Consisting of Non-Metallic or a Combination of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials.

Abstract

Work is under way to make optically clear laminates for the eye shield development by the auto-clave process. Various types of fabics and saturants were used in the light armor development and a new laminate was developed that weighted 27.2 oz. per sq. ft. and showed partial penetrations at velocities as high as 1566 feet per second. Three V5O Ballistic Limits tests were run during the month and a total of 197 rounds were fired in testing. Nylon has proven to be the best ballistic material of any fabrics used to date. Keywords: Body armor, Laminates, Plastics.
