The Development of Equipment and Methods for Studying the Dynamics of the Performance of Light Armor Consisting of Fibrous or a Combination of Fibrous and Metallic Materials.
Abstract
Investigations of the performance of single plates of aluminum and steel wre undertaken from which an empirical method was derived for evaluating performance on the basis of several static and dynamic tests. For the case of over-matching projectiles and the range of tests investigated, the method gives results which are in reasonable agreement with experimental measurements. The testing of single aluminum plates enclosed in nylon duck sacks of from two to six layers of fabric. Striking and residual velocities as well as the extent of permanent deformation have been measured. The testing of a number of combinations with the fabric layers in fore-and-aft positions with respect to the aluminum plate has been completed.
