Development of a Stable-Beta Titanium Alloy.
Abstract
Evaluation of four metastable alloys, Ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al, Ti-8Mo-8V-5Co-3Al, Ti-17V-7.5C0-3A1 and Ti-17V-2Fe-2C0-3Al, stabilized by aging for eight hours at 1100F, showed that although Ti-8Mo-8V-5Co-3Al and Ti-17V-7.5Co-3Al had greater room temperature and 600F strength, their rom temperature notch strengths were inferior to those of Ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al. Weldability studies indicated that Ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al combined good ductibility with moderate strength levels (134 Ksi yield) when aged for two hours at 900F; aging for 6 to 8 hours at 900F produced a yield strength of 150 Ksi with 3% elongation. The mill evaluation of Ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al proceeded with the evaluation of sections suct from 2-inch and 1/2-inch thick plate. Excellent strength/ductility combinations were obtained from the 1/2-inch section. Keywords: Titanium alloys; Molybdenum; Vanadium; Iron; Aluminum; Cobalt.
