Development of a Model System for Studies of Malabsorption in Diarrhic Animals.

Abstract

Galactose per-loaded segments prepared from hamster jejunum have been studied in terms of galactose efflux from the tissue. Evidence is presented for an outward pathway across the apical surface of the mucosal cells which is phloridzin insensitive, not dependent upon tissue sodium concentration or tissue/outside sodium gradients, but highly influenced by apical surface oxygenation. These data indicate an oxygen dependent mechanism other than the absorption pathway for galactose may play role in galactose movement by the mucosal tissue.
