Study and Development of Light Armor Materials.

Abstract

This report includes a general section setting for the industrial suppliers of resinous and nonresinous materials, the types of fibers and fabrics used and considered, and the coherences with Battelle Memorial Institute and other interested parties. The work performed under the previous contract is reviewed. Steps taken to clear representatives of resinous and non resinous materials makers for coherences under security regulations are indicated. The developmental work on opaque and transparent light weight armor is briefly summarized and the miscellaneous testing devices and methods, (other than the ballistic tests), are described. No V50 ballistic tests could be run because of the absence of the Potter chronagraph during the period, but preliminary tests on 6-in x 6-in pilot test panels were made, including a transparent type with clear nylon back-up that withstood striking velocities of 2110 feet per second at 0 deg. obliquity.
