Study and Development of Light-Armor Consisting of Non-Metallic or a Combination of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials.

Abstract

V50 Ballistic Limit tests were conducted on 10 ply, 15 ply, and 18 ply laminated nylon panels. The results for the 10 ply, 1315 feet per second; for the 15 ply, 1608 feet per second; and for the 18 ply, 1730 feet persecond. When plotted, the points fall nearby on a straight line. A combination was developed for the eye shield that withstood striking velocities of 1725 feet per second without spalliing. A total of 535 rounds was fired over our testing range during the month. A test panel was made using a 2x2 basket weave nylon saturated with a nylon solution which withstood on preliminary testing, higher velocities for less weight than comparable panels made from nylon saturated with Tenite II. Various combinations using methyl methacrylate sheets in conjunction with various thicknesses of saturated nylon was made and tested.
