Study and Development of Light-Armor Consisting of Non-Metallic or a Combination of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials.
Abstract
The facility's representatives visited Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Washington during the month. The Potter Chronograph was out of service for considerable periods during the month and only 101 rounds were fired and recorded. An eye shield combination was developed that withstood striking velocities of approximately 2000 ft. per sec. without spalling and was 91% optically clear as evaluated by Victory Plastics' Method. A 15 ply nylon panel was tested at -55 F and showed to be a little better ballistically than a similar one tested at room temperatures. A combination of nylon and methyl methacrylate on preliminary test showed promise and will be improved and thoroughly tested. Mildew resistance tests conducted on samples of saturated and unsaturated nylon were considered to have been satisfactorily passed.
