The Development of Chemical Compositions for 4 1/2 Inch Cast Armor Satisfying the Requirements of the Fibre Fracture Test after Heat Treatment
Abstract
The object of this report is to investigate chemical compositions for use in 4 and 1/2 inches thick cast armor which will yield a fibrous fracture after a normal quench and temper heat treatment and to evaluate the metallurgical properties of these steels. Summary of results shows: (1) Four of the steels investigated fracture in a fibrous manner when water is quenched in a 4 and 1/2 inch thick plate and tempered to a fairly low hardness. (2) A composition containing 2% chromium and .5 % molybdenum possessed insufficient hardenability for 4 and 1/2 plate when water quenched. The use of at least 2.5% chromium is apparently required for 4 and 1/2 inch thick armor in this type analysis.
