Effect of Rare Earths on Medium Carbon Alloy Steels.

Abstract

Tests on four steels with varied alloy content were conducted to determine if an addition of rare earth metal or rare earth oxide would enhance their ductility and toughness for Ordnance applications. Results obtained indicated that for cast material, 67 percent of the data showed little or no variation in impact energy at transition temperature, while 22 percent of the data showed the material with rare earth metal addition was best, and 14 percent of the base material (no addition) was best. For the rolled material, 55 percent of the data showed no significant variation in impact energy at transition temperature; 27 percent of the data revealed material with rare earth metal addition was best; 14 percent of the rare earth oxide addition best, and 5 percent of the material with no addition best. It was concluded that the addition of rare earths had no beneficial effect nor showed any significant trends. However, the addition of rare earths improved the impact properties in a few instances.
