Metallurgical Examination of 4 in. Cast Armor Project AW-10.

Abstract

A metallurgical examination, including fracture tests, Charpy impact tests. Brinell hardness surveys, and microscopic examination was made on seven samples of 4 in. thick cast armor under OCO-D project AW-10. The plates which the samples represent were heat treated to a higher hardness than regular production armor, namely, about 280 Brinell and were made to determine if the harder armor would possess improved ballistic properties. The results of these tests indicated that, in general, the plates had poor metallurgical properties resulting from either one or the combination of two factors, namely, inadequate quench hardening and an indicawtion of temper embrittlement. Furthermore no marked improvement was noted in the ballistic properties of these particular plates as compared with the ballistic properties of regular production cast armor of the same thickness.
