Ceramic Nozzles: A Metallographic Examination of Eroded, Hog-Pressed, Ceramic Nozzles for Recoilless Weapon.
Abstract
To develop metallographic techniques (a) to reveal the microstructure of eroded hot-pressed ceramic nozzles; (b) to determine whether the bore surfaces have undergone any chemical or structural changes; and (c) to ascertain whether erosion takes place only by mechanical abrasion, or by mechanical abrasion accompanied by other physical and chemical processes. Metallographic methods wee selected and utilized to reveal the microstructure of these eroded hot-pressed ceramic nozzles. Each material required individual study and the use of a specific etchant to reveal the structural details. In most cases, erosion of the hot-pressed ceramic nozzles appeared to be a more complicated process than mere mechanical abrasion. Evidences of chemical reaction, increasee porosity, melting, thermal shock, an other alterations are revealed when the bore surface is observed metallographical in a polished and etched cross-section.
